Engineering always challenges physical laws. This test below shows how important it is to find a solution for vibration as you can see the detrimental effects vibrations can have on locking nuts and their ability to hold tension on what ever they are holding tightly. At Lalor Engineering we see this in practice out and about and in the workshop. Our Cabbed vehicles have markers on the wheel nuts to ensure that any movement is noted and tightened to the correct NM load. On many projects we will utilise a tack weld to ensure there is no movement.

It was about time we showed our face to Facebook. With the new workshop and projects underway we wanted to diversify and allow our Facebook friends a chance to drop by and say hello.

Hard to believe but alas its true, we know so very little about our planet and less about our late brothers and sisters. How technology played a crucial role in daily life. Technology that has been superseded time and time again yet the engineering behind some of these marvels are a wonder to us. “This incredibly long-lived hydraulic technology played a crucial role in enabling communities to grow food and thrive in the challenging landscapes of Nubia for over 3000 years.”

An international research team, in collaboration with the British Museum and the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums, has made a groundbreaking discovery along the banks of the River Nile in Egypt and Sudan. They have uncovered an extensive network of ancient river groins, or stone walls built perpendicular to the river bank, which served as hydraulic engineering structures connecting ancient Nubia and Egypt.

Using advanced techniques such as satellite imagery, drones, ground surveys, and historical sources, the team mapped around 1300 river groins spanning from southern Egypt to Sudan. Some of these groins were submerged under the Aswan High Dam reservoir, but their existence was rediscovered through historical records and aerial photographs.

Many of these river groins are now found in ancient, dry Nile channels within the desert, indicating their historical importance. Radiocarbon and luminescence dating techniques revealed that some of these walls date back over 3,000 years. This suggests that indigenous Nubian communities and later inhabitants of towns established by the ancient Egyptian state used this form of landscape engineering to adapt to changing river flows caused by climate change.

The river groins acted as barriers that captured fertile silts during the Nile’s annual inundation, enabling agricultural activities without artificial irrigation. They played a crucial role in supporting communities in Nubia for over 4,000 years, and some of the land formed by these walls is still cultivated today.

Additionally, the researchers identified massive stone walls within the Nile, which functioned as monumental barrages, directing river flow and facilitating boat navigation through hazardous rapids. These structures connected ancient Egypt and Nubia, contributing to the movement of resources, armies, people, and ideas along the Nile.

The study highlights the remarkable ingenuity of ancient civilizations and deepens our understanding of their interactions and adaptations to changing environments. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research in uncovering enduring traditions, technologies, and agricultural practices within Nubia. The discovery of these ancient river groins provides valuable insights into the rich history of the Nile Valley.

Moving I-beams around the workshop can be a challenging task that requires a significant amount of care and attention to ensure that both the workers and the equipment are kept safe. Here are some things to watch out for while moving I-beams around the workshop:

  1. Weight and Size: I-beams can be extremely heavy and large, making them difficult to maneuver. Workers should be aware of the weight and size of the I-beam before attempting to move it and should always use appropriate lifting equipment and techniques.
  2. Balance: When lifting an I-beam, it is crucial to ensure that it is balanced correctly. If the weight is not evenly distributed, the I-beam may shift, causing it to become unstable and potentially causing injury to the workers or damage to the equipment.
  3. Clearance: When moving I-beams around the workshop, workers should be aware of their surroundings and ensure that there is enough clearance to move the I-beam without hitting any obstacles. This can include other equipment, walls, or people.
  4. Ground Surface: The ground surface should be flat and level to ensure that the I-beam can be moved safely without tipping over or becoming unstable. Any obstructions, such as loose debris or uneven surfaces, should be cleared before moving the I-beam.
  5. Visibility: Workers should have a clear line of sight while moving I-beams around the workshop to ensure that they can see any potential hazards and avoid collisions. If visibility is limited, workers should use spotters to guide the movement of the I-beam.
  6. Communication: Communication is essential when moving I-beams around the workshop. Workers should communicate with each other to coordinate the movement of the I-beam and ensure that everyone is aware of what is happening.

In summary, moving I-beams around the workshop requires careful planning and execution to ensure the safety of workers and equipment. By following these guidelines and being aware of potential hazards, workers can safely move I-beams without incident.

Replacing worn teeth on a metal saw on a regular basis is an essential practice to ensure that the saw continues to function effectively and provides a clean and precise cut. As a saw blade is used, the teeth become dull and worn, which can cause the saw to struggle to cut through the material, or leave jagged and uneven edges.

By replacing the worn teeth with fresh ones, the saw blade can be restored to its optimal cutting capacity, enabling it to make smoother and more accurate cuts. This also extends the lifespan of the saw blade, making it a more cost-effective solution in the long run.

Additionally, using lubrication while cutting is crucial to reducing friction and heat buildup during the cutting process. Lubrication can prevent the saw blade from becoming overheated, which can cause it to warp or bend, and can also help to prevent the material from becoming damaged or distorted.

Lubrication also helps to prevent the saw blade from becoming clogged with debris, which can cause the saw to become stuck or jammed. Using the appropriate lubrication for the material being cut can also help to prevent rust and corrosion from developing on the saw blade, which can further extend its lifespan.

In summary, regularly replacing worn teeth on a metal saw and using appropriate lubrication during cutting are important practices to ensure the saw performs at its best and provides a clean and precise cut. These practices can help to extend the lifespan of the saw blade, reduce the risk of damage or distortion to the material being cut, and ultimately save time and money in the long run.
